The quick answer
Best overall for most first-time visitors:
Myeongdong or nearby central Seoul.
Best for nightlife and younger travelers:
Hongdae.
Best for palaces and traditional Seoul:
Jongno / Insadong.
Best for modern Seoul and south-of-the-river plans:
Gangnam.
Best for KTX and easy intercity travel:
Seoul Station.
Best for Lotte World and southeast Seoul:
Jamsil.
The most important rule: choose the area before the hotel
Seoul is a huge city. A hotel can look excellent on a booking site, but if it puts you far from the places you want to visit, you may spend a surprising amount of your trip on the subway.
For a first trip, I would choose the neighborhood first and the hotel second.
Don't ask only “Is this hotel in Seoul?”
Ask:
• Which subway station is closest?
• Which subway lines are there?
• How far is the hotel from the station exit?
• Is the walk uphill?
• Is the area still convenient late at night?
• How difficult will the airport transfer be with luggage?
Best areas to stay in Seoul compared
| Area | Best for | Main downside |
|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | First trip, shopping, central sightseeing | Touristy and busy |
| Hongdae | Nightlife, cafés, younger travelers, airport rail | Can be noisy and farther from historic sights |
| Jongno / Insadong | Palaces, traditional culture, central sightseeing | Quieter at night |
| Gangnam | Shopping, business, nightlife, modern Seoul | Farther from many classic sights |
| Seoul Station | AREX, KTX, intercity travel | Less neighborhood atmosphere |
| Jamsil | Lotte World, families, concerts | Far southeast for many first-trip sights |
1. Myeongdong — best all-around choice for most first-timers
Myeongdong
If someone asked me where to stay on a first trip to Seoul without giving me any other information, Myeongdong would be one of the first areas I'd check.
It's centrally located for many classic Seoul attractions and is one of the city's best-known shopping districts.
Large choice of hotels
Shopping and food nearby
Tourist services are easy to find
Not the best local neighborhood feel
Some restaurants and stores target tourists heavily
Myeongdong is especially useful if your first trip includes places such as Gyeongbokgung, Insadong, Namdaemun, N Seoul Tower, Dongdaemun and central Seoul.
The official Visit Seoul guide also treats Myeongdong as one of the city's major visitor areas and highlights it as a major shopping district.
Hotels marketed as being in Myeongdong can be closer to Myeong-dong Station, Euljiro 1-ga or other nearby stations. That can change your daily route considerably.
2. Hongdae — best for nightlife, cafés and younger travelers
Hongdae
Hongdae has a very different atmosphere from Myeongdong.
It's a university area known for music, performances, cafés, bars, shopping and late-night activity. The official Seoul tourism site also describes Hongdae as a center of pop and indie culture, especially at night.
Lots of cafés and restaurants
Younger atmosphere
Hongik University Station connects to AREX
Farther from some historic sights
Large area — hotel location matters
Hongdae is a particularly strong choice if you expect to stay out late and want cafés, bars and activity around your hotel.
The AREX All-Stop Train serves Hongik University Station, so Hongdae can be convenient for travelers arriving from Incheon Airport.
3. Jongno / Insadong — best for traditional Seoul
Jongno / Insadong
Choose this area if the historic side of Seoul is one of the main reasons you're visiting.
Insadong is known for traditional shops, tea houses, galleries and cultural streets, while the surrounding Jongno area puts you close to palaces and older parts of central Seoul.
Traditional atmosphere
Very central for sightseeing
Good for slower cultural trips
Less of the modern shopping atmosphere of Hongdae or Gangnam
The official Seoul tourism guide describes Insadong as a central neighborhood known for antique shops, folk art, traditional tea houses and galleries.
4. Gangnam — best if your plans are mostly south of the Han River
Gangnam
Gangnam is famous internationally, but that doesn't automatically make it the best base for a first Seoul trip.
It works very well when your plans are concentrated around southern Seoul — for example Gangnam Station, COEX, Apgujeong, Cheongdam or nearby areas.
Shopping and restaurants
Business hotels
Nightlife and K-culture nearby
Can mean crossing the river repeatedly
Not my default pick for a classic first-time itinerary
Booking Gangnam simply because the name is famous, then realizing most of your sightseeing is around Gyeongbokgung, Insadong, Myeongdong and central Seoul.
5. Seoul Station — best for transportation convenience
Seoul Station
Seoul Station can be extremely practical if transportation is more important to you than neighborhood atmosphere.
It connects with AREX and major rail services, which is useful if you're arriving from Incheon Airport or planning trips to other Korean cities.
KTX access
Central transportation hub
Good for multi-city Korea trips
Large station can involve long walks with luggage
6. Jamsil — best for Lotte World and family trips
Jamsil
Jamsil makes sense when major parts of your itinerary are already in southeast Seoul.
It's especially convenient for Lotte World, Lotte World Tower and events around the Jamsil area.
Family-friendly attractions
Modern shopping and dining
Useful for nearby concerts and events
Not the most efficient base for a classic central-Seoul itinerary
Which area should you choose?
My choice for a typical 3–5 day first trip
For a typical first visit that mixes palaces, Myeongdong, traditional neighborhoods, markets, shopping and a few modern Seoul areas, I'd usually start my hotel search around Myeongdong or nearby central Seoul.
That doesn't mean Myeongdong is objectively the “best” neighborhood. It means it tends to create fewer transportation compromises for a common first-time itinerary.
If nightlife matters more than historic sightseeing, I'd move Hongdae much higher.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Seoul for a first-time visitor?
For many first-time visitors, Myeongdong or another convenient central Seoul area is a strong all-around choice. However, Hongdae, Jongno and Gangnam can be better for specific travel styles.
Is Myeongdong a good place to stay?
Yes, especially for a first trip focused on central sightseeing, shopping and convenient tourist infrastructure.
Is Hongdae better than Myeongdong?
It depends on your priorities. Hongdae is generally stronger for nightlife and cafés, while Myeongdong is usually more convenient for a classic central-Seoul sightseeing itinerary.
Should I stay in Gangnam on my first trip?
Gangnam is a good choice if much of your itinerary is south of the Han River. If most of your plans involve palaces and historic central Seoul, another area may reduce travel time.
Where should families stay in Seoul?
It depends on the itinerary. Jamsil is convenient for Lotte World, while central Seoul may work better for families planning a broader first-time sightseeing trip.
