SEOUL SUBWAY GUIDE

How to Use the Seoul Subway

A practical first-time guide to fares, T-money cards, single-use tickets, station exits, transfers and navigation on Seoul's subway system.

Updated August 2026

The quick answer

Best option for most tourists:
Use a transportation card such as T-money and tap in and out at every subway journey.

Current adult base fare:
₩1,550 with a transportation card.

No transportation card?
You can buy a single-journey ticket at a station vending machine.

Is the Seoul subway difficult for tourists?

Usually, no. Once you understand how fares, transfers and station exits work, the Seoul subway is one of the easiest ways to travel around the city.

Stations have numbered exits, many signs include English, and ticket vending machines provide foreign-language options.

Local Mode Tip:
The hardest part for many first-time visitors isn't choosing the subway line. It's choosing the correct station exit after arriving. A wrong exit at a large station can add a surprisingly long walk.

Seoul subway fare in 2026

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the current adult base fare is:

Ticket type Adult base fare

The fare can increase depending on the distance traveled.

How to ride the Seoul subway step by step

1
Find your destination station Use a navigation app to find the correct subway station, line and direction of travel.
2
Check the line color and direction Don't look only at the line number. Make sure you're entering the platform in the correct direction.
3
Tap your transportation card Place your card on the reader at the ticket gate.
4
Follow transfer signs if needed Large transfer stations can involve several minutes of walking, so follow the signs carefully.
5

6
Tap out when you leave Tap your transportation card again at the exit gate.

T-money or single-journey ticket?

Transportation card

For most visitors who plan to use public transportation several times, a rechargeable transportation card is more convenient than repeatedly buying individual tickets.

It also allows you to use Seoul's integrated transfer fare system when the conditions are met.

Important:
When using buses and subways together, remember to tap your transportation card when boarding and getting off. The transfer system depends on those taps being recorded.

Single-journey ticket

If you don't have a transportation card, you can buy a single-journey ticket at a subway station vending machine.

Seoul's official transportation guidance states that the vending machines include foreign-language settings.

You pay the subway fare plus a ₩500 deposit. After reaching your destination, insert the ticket into the station's deposit-refund machine to receive the ₩500 back.

Single-journey tickets are subway-only.
If you're going to use buses as well, a transportation card is generally much more practical.

How subway transfers work

Seoul uses an integrated public transportation fare system.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, up to five transfers can be included under the integrated fare system, subject to the relevant conditions.

The standard transfer window is generally within 30 minutes after getting off the previous mode of transportation.

Between 9 PM and 7 AM, the transfer window is extended to 60 minutes.

Very important:
You need to tap your card when getting on and off for the transfer system to recognize your journey correctly.

Station exits matter more than you think

Example:

A station might have Exit 1, Exit 2, Exit 3, all the way through Exit 10 or more.

Two exits at the same station can put you on opposite sides of a major road or several blocks apart.

Before getting off the train, check which exit is closest to your destination.

This becomes especially important at large stations and popular areas such as Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Seoul Station.

K Local Mode will build separate Which Exit? guides for major visitor destinations because this is one of the small details that makes traveling in Seoul much easier.

Which subway app should tourists use?

For actual route planning in Korea, many visitors use Korean navigation services such as Naver Map.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government also provides the Seoul Subway app for international visitors. Its features include route information, location-based route recommendations, station guidance and nearby tourist information.

We'll cover navigation apps separately because using the right app makes transportation in Korea significantly easier.

Subway etiquette tourists should know

You don't need to memorize a long list of rules, but a few habits will make your trip smoother.

Let passengers exit first Wait beside the doors while people leave the train before boarding.
Keep priority seats available Be aware of designated seating for passengers who need it.
Keep calls and audio quiet Subway cars are generally quieter than public transportation in some other countries.
Don't block escalators or entrances with luggage Large suitcases can create congestion in busy stations.

What if you enter through the wrong gate?

Some parts of Seoul's subway network allow re-entry within a limited time after exiting through the wrong gate, but the applicable lines and sections can differ.

Rather than relying on that feature, check your platform direction and exit carefully before passing through a gate.
